What Is EMDR Therapy?
EMDR is an approach designed to help the brain process traumatic memories in a new way, so they no longer feel as intense or disruptive. Research has shown that engaging both sides of the brain helps the mind and body integrate past events in a healthier way.
This method allows you to:
- Reduce emotional distress tied to traumatic memories
- Diminish the power of triggers and intrusive thoughts
- Strengthen your sense of safety and control
- Move forward without being held back by the past
How EMDR Works
During an EMDR session, you’ll work with your therapist to identify target memories. Then, you would focus on that target memory while at the same time moving your eyes from side to side as guided by the therapist. This engages both sides of the brain when the memory is processed. (We can use other senses, like hearing or touch, to create the same effect of stimulating both sides of the brain.)
Through this method, memories that are stored in one part of the brain get information from the other side and new neural pathways are created. When new neural pathways are created, stored painful emotions can be transformed and even healed.
The process is structured, safe, and paced according to your comfort level. You remain in control at every step.
